University Park, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Let’s all get healthy.

Governors State University is sponsoring a day of activities designed to give area residents the tools to make a lasting commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Community Health Day at GSU, on Thursday, July 18, will empower children and families to eat healthy, get moving and grow their own garden.

GSU, a Community Leader in the national “Let’s Move!” initiative, is committed to harvesting healthy futures in the south suburban region and beyond. GSU is partnering with the “Let’s Move!” campaign, a comprehensive initiative, launched by First Lady Michelle Obama, that is dedicated to solving the problem of childhood obesity within a generation. As a Let’s Move Community Leader, GSU is offering a series of exciting events that will educate on nutrition and get you moving to improve your health.

From a high energy obstacle course in GSU’s Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park to Nutrition Mission by Kid Power at the Center for Performing Arts and tips on organic gardening, the Community Health Day will provide valuable insights to healthier living for you and your family.

Events include:

  • Nutrition Mission by Kid Power at 11 a.m. in the GSU Center for Performing Arts. This program teaches kids to find a balanced approach to healthy eating and exercise. Using spectacular 3-D visual effects and audience interaction, Kid Power takes an amazing journey inside the human body, and gives the facts on whole vs. processed foods, and the concept of “calories in vs. calories out.” Souvenir 3-D glasses included. Whole Foods-Orland Park will provide free trail mix snacks. This show is recommended for ages: 4 to 12. To purchase tickets, or for further information, contact the box office at www.CenterTickets.net or call (708) 235-2222.
  • Get Moving at Noon, in the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park. Who says exercise has to be boring? Test your endurance by participating in our obstacle course! Recreation and Fitness Center Staff will be on hand to assist you. If music inspires you to move, join us for a special dance workshop and learn how to dance like Beyoncé to ‘Move Your Body’.
  • Learn About Organic Gardening at 12:30 p.m. at the University Sustainable Garden. The community garden at Governors State University is a resource for families across the Chicago Southland to take control of their health by planting a custom-designed garden. Join Master Gardener Nancy Kujhada from the University of Illinois Extension for tips on organic gardening and composting.
