Spring Semester Offers Opportunities for Musicians at Prairie State College


CHICAGO HEIGHTS–(ENEWSPF)–January 14, 2016.  Spring 2016 registration is open at Prairie State College (PSC), and the schedule brings special opportunities for musicians to join one of the various ensembles the college offers during the semester. Classes for the spring semester begin Tuesday, Jan. 19.

The Wind Ensemble, directed by music educator Phil Crews, will meet on Mondays at 6:30 p.m., in room 105 of the K Building (K-105), located on the north side of Vollmer road across from the college’s main campus at 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights. Performers interested in joining the Wind Ensemble must be playing at an intermediate or higher level.

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by singer Toni Bell, will meet Mondays at 7 p.m., in room 3275 on the college’s main campus.

Veteran jazz musician Eugene Vinyard will direct the Jazz Ensemble on Tuesdays at 7 p.m., in room K-105.

The Concert Choir will meet on Tuesdays at 7 p.m., in the Temple B’nai Yehuda Beth Sholom. The choir is directed by Jo Rodenberg, and an audition for acceptance is required. To set up an audition, call (708) 709-3742.

Ruben Alvarez, Chicago’s premier Latin jazz percussionist, will lead the Latin Jazz Ensemble on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in K-105.

The fee to join each ensemble is the cost of one credit hour at the college and offers one college credit for performers who are interested. Performers ages 65 and older can take the credit courses at no charge.

PSC also is presenting its 28th Annual Jazz Festival at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 19. Some of the nation’s top jazz artists will perform at during the event in the Barnes & Noble College Auditorium in the Conference Center of the main campus. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors. For more information, visit prairiestate.edu/jazzfest. This year, the PSC Foundation is sponsoring a VIP reception prior to Jazz Fest offering attendees and opportunity to meet the Jazz Fest musicians. There will be cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and entertainment. Tickets are $15.00, and may be purchased in advance at the PSC Business Office or the night of the event.
