Chicago Heights, IL—(ENEWSPF)—November 25, 2013. Prairie State College (PSC) Communications Professor Elighie Wilson was named the 2013 recipient of the W.P. Sandford Presidential Award given out by the Illinois Communication and Theatre Association (ICTA). Wilson received the award during the 2013 ICTA conference.
The award is the highest award presented by ICTA, and recognizes members who have given exceptional service to the association over an extended period of years and have made a significant contribution to the field of communication.
Wilson has been teaching at PSC since 2000. He is coordinator of the Communication program, coordinator of faculty development, and coach of the speech team. He joined the PSC faculty after leaving Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., where he was an instructor and coordinator of the Communication Internship Program. Prior to teaching at Millikin, Wilson had been a part-time instructor at Lincoln College in Normal, Ill., a teaching assistant at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a teaching assistant, director of the Individual Events Team, instructor, and then coordinator of the Secondary Communication Education Program at Illinois State University.
He has a bachelor’s degree from Ball State University and a master’s degree from Illinois State University.
“The reason we do what we do is because we want to help people to dream those impossible dreams. We want to empower people. And, we want the people that we empower to inspire others,” Wilson said during his acceptance speech.
PSC President Dr. Terri L. Winfree said, “Professor Wilson is a master in the classroom and we are grateful that he shares his masterful talents at the Regional High School Summer Speech Camp and with the PSC’s nationally recognized speech team.”
The award is named after W. P. Sandford, who served as president of ISTA in 1930 and 1931. He was a professor of English and Rhetoric at the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana. He published numerous scholarly articles in the field of speech including in the Quarterly Journal of Speech.
