After Historically Cold Weather, Students will Return to Class
CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–January 28, 2014. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students will resume classes on Wednesday after dangerously cold temperatures and severe winds forced closures on Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to warm Wednesday close to January averages, making it safe for students and staff to return.
“At CPS, the safety and security of Chicago’s children is among our top priorities,” said CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett. “We are confident that we have made decisions this week in the best interest of student safety, and we look forward to returning to the classroom and delivering a 21st century education that will put students on a path for success in college, career and life.”
The District has begun the process to notify parents of re-opening school buildings through all of its regular communication channels via robo-calls, emails, and through media outlets. Parents can also call (773) 553-1000 or visit the CPS website for more information. All regularly scheduled after-school and sporting activities will resume on Wednesday.
January 2014 already ranks among the coldest and snowiest on record in Chicago. Dangerous subzero temperatures, combined with high winds and snow, forced CPS to close schools district-wide four times since Jan. 1. The District added two days to its academic calendar – March 28 and June 11 – after the first round of closings on Jan. 5 and Jan. 6 and are working to find suitable make-up days on the calendar for the two days missed this week. CPS will conduct outreach to parents and guardians as soon as a decision is made.
CPS continues to work in collaboration with other city departments to monitor weather conditions and to ensure that schools are prepared to host students and staff for a safe return.
