Congresswoman Duckworth Announces U.S. House STEM Competition Winners

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–June 16, 2014.  Today, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth congratulated Matthew McKellar, Kristen McKellar, Ethan Shaw and Chris Laker for winning the first ever U.S. House STEM App Competition with their entry titled, “College Prep Timer.”

This application is a study timer for pacing questions during test practice that many high school students face. This team was chosen by the 8th District STEM App Judges Panel, which consisted of industry leaders across the Chicagoland area. Their app was chosen based on set criteria, which included app usability, creativity, and real world application, among other items.

These students are home schooled and are taught by their parents in Elgin, Illinois and Hanover Park, Illinois, respectively.

The Congresswoman gave honorable mentions to Stefan Aleksic of Schaumburg, IL for his entry titled, “Bestr”, a web-based application that analyzes public opinion on Twitter at the touch of a button, and to Nathan Walters of Rolling Meadows, IL for his entry titled, “WildRank”, which would eliminate the paper scouting process at FIRST Robotics competitions.

Established by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013, this competition is a nationwide event that invited high school students from all participating congressional districts to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. It is designed to promote innovation and engagement in the STEM education fields.
