Indiana Marks Fifth Anti-Abortion Law to Fall in Four Days

INDIANA–(ENEWSPF)–July 1, 2016.  Yesterday, an Indiana district court preliminarily blocked enforcement of an extreme abortion restriction — making Indiana’s law the fifth anti-abortion law to falter since the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt on Monday. This includes restrictions in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, and Wisconsin. The decision in Indiana came moments after Planned Parenthood announced a campaign to repeal unjust and dangerous abortion restrictions in eight states around the country – with more to come.

Indiana’s sweeping restrictions would ban abortions based on “race, color, national origin, ancestry, sex; or a diagnosis or potential diagnosis” of a disability — provisions opposed by leading medical experts, members of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus, and  the Arc of Indiana, a disability rights group, and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky is represented in this case by attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and the American Civil Liberties Union.

Quote from Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America:

“The momentum from Monday’s landmark decision has already stopped abortion restrictions in five states in their tracks — and that number will only continue to grow. These unconstitutional laws punish women, and we will bring them down law by law and state by state. We have been fighting these restrictions on all fronts for years, organizing in the field, building for this moment — and now the wind is at our backs.”
