Seven-Figure Ad Buy Supports EPA and Obama Clean Air Protections against Industrial Carbon Pollution
WASHINGTON, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)–March 6, 2012. If every polluter’s lobbyist around Congress was suddenly replaced by severely asthmatic children, then maybe Congress wouldn’t always be trying to gut clean air standards. On Wednesday, the Sierra Club and the Natural Resources Defense Council will launch a seven-figure TV ad buy based on that theme and aimed at raising public awareness of and support for President Obama’s and the EPA’s new safeguards against industrial carbon pollution from power plants.
The ad reflects the growing body of scientific evidence that warming temperatures caused by industrial carbon pollution worsen smog pollution, which in turn causes asthma attacks and other respiratory illnesses. The Environmental Protection Agency is planning, as early as next week, to propose first-ever safeguards against industrial carbon pollution from new power plants.
“Carbon pollution poses serious threats to Americans’ health, our economy and the future of our children, but there are currently no federal limits on the amount of carbon being spewed into the air by the nation’s largest sources of carbon pollution – dirty coal-fired power plants,” said Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club. “Updating air quality protections will allow the EPA to focus on the industries that create the lion’s share of the nation’s carbon pollution and will also help reduce life-threatening air pollutants like dirty soot, toxic mercury and the smog that triggers asthma attacks.”
“Doctors and nurses tell us we save lives and improve our children’s health by reducing mercury, soot and industrial carbon pollution from power plants,” said Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council. “Yet many in Congress have tried to block efforts to continue cleaning up the air we breathe. Clean air should be a birthright. Congress shouldn’t take that away.”
Doctors, nurses, scientists and other experts say that industrial carbon pollution is dangerous for children because it makes smog pollution worse, which triggers asthma attacks and permanently damages and reduces the function of children’s lungs. Leading public health groups like the American Lung Association and the American Public Health Association support strict limits on industrial carbon pollution and have linked this dangerous air pollution to asthma attacks, heart attacks and even premature deaths.
The ad campaign, sponsored by Sierra Club and Natural Resources Defense Council, will appear in 12 major media markets in three states: Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and in Washington, DC. The ads will run on 75-85 stations and media outlets. Sierra Club ads will appear in Norfolk, VA, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Toledo, OH and Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Wilkes-Barre, PA.
