Already Debunked Lies in Trump’s Economic Speech—Round 1

NEW YORK–(ENEWSPF)–August 8, 2016.  Donald Trump is not known for telling the truth.  For example, here’s 101 of Trump’s greatest lies. As Thomas Wells, Trump’s former attorney said, “The man lies all the time.”

Still, Trump outdid himself lying today in his economic speech in Detroit.   While we’re sure there are many more fact checks coming from a speech that was so light on details and so heavy on fabrication, we compiled some of Trump’s lies that have been proven wrong already.

Here’s lies that have previously been debunked, but were told by Trump this afternoon:

  1. TRUMP: “Recently, at a campaign event Hillary Clinton short-circuited — you know this, you’ve heard this one. Hillary Clinton short-circuited again to use a now famous term when she accidentally told the truth and said she wanted to raise taxes on the middle class.”

FACT: REPORTERS CALLED OUT THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN FOR LYING ABOUT WHAT CLINTON SAID AND AFFIRMED SHE SAID SHE WOULDN’T RAISE TAXES ON THE MIDDLE CLASS

“Trump Campaign Falsifies Hillary Clinton’s Stance On Taxes” [CBS, 8/5/16]

  1. TRUMP: “As part of this reform, we will eliminate the Carried Interest Deduction, a well-known deduction, and other special interest loopholes that have been so good for Wall Street investors and for people like me, but unfair to American workers.”

FACT:  TRUMP’S TAX PLAN WOULD END UP GIVING A TAX CUT TO THOSE WHO CURRENTLY USE THE CARRIED INTEREST LOOPHOLE

“Trump’s Tough Talk On Hedge-Fund Taxes Doesn’t Match His Plan.” [Bloomberg, 5/9/16]

  1. TRUMP: “These are the real unemployment numbers – the five percent figure is one of the biggest hoaxes in modern politics.”

FACT: TRUMP’S CLAIMS ABOUT UNEMPLOYMENT SHOW A BASIC MISUNDERSTANDING OF EMPLOYMENT STATISTICS

“Trump’s claims on the unemployment rate would not pass muster in an Economics 101 course… Thus he once again earns Four Pinocchios.” [Fact Checker, Washington Post, 1/20/16]

  1. TRUMP: “We will put our coal miners and our steel workers back to work.”

FACT: TRUMP’S PLANS FOR COAL SHOW A BASIC MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE ENERGY MARKET

“Trump, however, has yet to explain exactly how he will revitalize Appalachia’s coal industry. To pull it off, he will have to overcome market forces and a push for cleaner fuels that have pummeled coal. Coal’s slump is largely the result of cheap natural gas, which now rivals coal as a fuel for generating electricity.” [Associated Press, 5/5/16]

“Mr. Trump has backed some energy policies, such as requiring more ethanol production, that are widely criticized by energy experts. He has made contradictory remarks on alternative energy sources, such as wind and solar. And he has made pledges — for example, to restore lost jobs in coal mining — that essentially defy free-market forces.” [New York Times, 5/26/16]

  1. TRUMP: “It will be American workers who are hired to do the job, American workers.”

FACT: TRUMP HAS REPEATEDLY CHOSEN TO HIRE FOREIGN WORKERS OVER AMERICANS

“Last summer, The Washington Post found that Mr. Trump was using undocumented immigrants for the construction of his Trump International Hotel at the site of the Old Post Office Pavilion in Washington. And The Times reported this year that Mr. Trump has employed hundreds of foreign guest workers from Romania and other countries at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.” [New York Times, 6/30/16]

“Since 2010, nearly 300 United States residents have applied or been referred for jobs as waiters, waitresses, cooks and housekeepers there. But according to federal records, only 17 have been hired… But he has also pursued more than 500 visas for foreign workers at Mar-a-Lago since 2010, according to the United States Department of Labor, while hundreds of domestic applicants failed to get the same jobs.” [New York Times, 2/25/16]

  1. TRUMP: “One of my first acts as President will be to repeal and replace disastrous Obamacare, saving another 2 million American jobs.”

FACT: AS A WASHINGTON POST FACT CHECKER JUST TWEETED, “We exposed the falsity of the 2 million job ACA claim more than two years ago — how does this live on?”

“No, CBO Did Not Say Obamacare Will Kill 2 Million Jobs” [Fact Checker, Washington Post, 2/4/14]

“Here we go again. During the 2012 campaign, The Fact Checker had to repeatedly explain that the Congressional Budget Office never said that the Affordable Care Act ‘killed’ 800,000 jobs by 2021. Now, the CBO has released an updated estimate, nearly the triple the size of the earlier one: 2.3 million in 2021…. Once again, we award Three Pinocchios to anyone who deliberately gets this wrong.” [Fact Checker, Washington Post, 2/4/14]

  1. TRUMP: “Hillary Clinton, who has spent her career voting for tax increases, plans another massive, job-killing $1.3 trillion tax increase.”

FACT: ECONOMIC ANALYSTS SAY HILLARY CLINTON’S PLANS WOULD HELP CREATE 10.4 MILLION JOBS

“Moody’s Analytics estimates that if the Democratic presidential nominee’s proposals are enacted, the economy would create 10.4 million jobs during her presidency, or 3.2 million more than expected under current law… Moody’s published a similar analysis of Donald Trump’s plans in June. It concluded that the Republican presidential nominee’s policies would result in an economic downturn that would last longer than the Great Recession. About 3.5 million Americans would lose their jobs, unemployment would jump to 7% and home prices would fall.” [CNN Money, 7/29/16]

“The Tax Policy Center concluded that the sum of Clinton’s proposed tax changes — including changes to both individual and business taxes — would increase revenue by $1.1 trillion over the next decade. ‘Nearly all of the tax increases would fall on the top 1 percent; the bottom 95 percent of taxpayers would see little or no change in their taxes,’ the Tax Policy Center concluded.” [FactCheck.org, 6/28/16]

  1. TRUMP ON DETROIT: “This is a city controlled by Democratic politicians at every level, and unless we change policies, we will not change results, 100%.”

FACT: MICHIGAN’S STATE HOUSE AND SENATE ARE HELD BY REPUBLICANS, AND THEY HAVE A REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR.

“Michigan Republicans Dominate State Elections, Grow Majorities In House And Senate” [MLive, 11/5/14]

“Michigan Republicans didn’t just hold onto the state House and Senate on Tuesday night, they grew their majorities. That means Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, who won re-election over Democratic challenger Mark Schauer, will enjoy at least two more years of full GOP control in Lansing.” [MLive, 11/5/14]

  1. TRUMP: “There are now 94.3 million Americans outside the labor force.”

FACT: TRUMP’S CLAIMS ABOUT THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE OUTSIDE THE WORK FORCE IGNORE THE FACT THAT SOME PEOPLE ARE STUDENTS, OR RETIRED

“Donald Trump says U.S. has 93 million people ‘out of work,’ but that’s way too high” [PolitiFact, 8/31/15]

  1. TRUMP: “58 percent of African-American youth are either outside the labor force or not employed.”

FACT: TRUMP’S CLAIMS ABOUT AFRICAN-AMERICAN YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT IGNORE THE FACT THAT SOME ARE IN COLLEGE

“Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Thursday night said 58 percent of African-American youth are not employed. Plain Dealer fact check: False.” [Cleveland Plain-Dealer, 7/21/16]

  1. TRUMP: “Finally, no family will have to pay the death tax. American workers — [applause] American workers have paid taxes their whole lives and they should not be taxed again at death.”

FACT: ROUGHLY 2 OUT OF EVERY 1000 PEOPLE WHO DIE OWE ANY ESTATE TAX

“…Trump himself called it a burden on the “American worker.” Yet as we observed in 2009, the estate tax affects only a few thousand people at most, all of them multimillionaires with an average nest egg of more than $30 million. We can think of no better way to lay out the stupidity of the argument against the “death tax” than to republish the column we wrote about it on April 13, 2009.” [Michael Hiltzik, Los Angeles Times, 8/8/16]

“Only the wealthiest estates pay the tax because it is levied only on the portion of an estate’s value that exceeds a specified exemption level — $5.43 million per person (effectively $10.86 million per married couple) in 2015.[2]  The estate tax thus limits, to a modest degree, the large tax breaks that extremely wealthy households get on their wealth as it grows, which can otherwise go untaxed. […] Today, 99.8 percent of estates owe no estate tax at all, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation.[3]  Only the estates of the wealthiest 0.2 percent of Americans — roughly 2 out of every 1,000 people who die — owe any estate tax.  (See Figure 1.)  This is because of the tax’s high exemption amount, which has jumped from $650,000 per person in 2001 to $5.43 million per person in 2015.” [CBPP, 3/23/15]

  1. TRUMP ON THE SOUTH KOREA TRADE DEAL: “Instead of creating 70,000 jobs, it has killed nearly 100,000 jobs, according to the Economic Policy Institute.”

FACT: THE SOUTH KOREA TRADE DEAL DID NOT LEAD TO 70,000 JOBS LOST

“A reader asked us to explore this assertion of 85,000 lost jobs from the U.S.-South Korea Free Trade Agreement, noting that a year earlier Public Citizen asserted that an increase in the trade deficit amounted to 70,000 lost American jobs… As we noted, using the data on exported goods properly, without inflation adjustment or starting from a selective month, would yield a gain of 7,000 jobs…. Four Pinocchios.” [Fact Checker, Washington Post, 4/7/15]
