Rep. Jan Schakowsky Statement Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion

Chicago, IL—(ENEWSPF)—June 6, 2014. Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement commemorating the anniversary:

“Seventy years ago today, thousands of American forces and our allies participating in Operation Overlord crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy, France as part of the largest amphibious invasion in history.

“These forces were the tip of the spear, and the bravery they demonstrated assaulting what was then known as ‘Fortress Europe’ will be remembered for countless generations to come.   At the end of the day, thousands of American, British and Canadian soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice and many more were wounded, but the allied forces had successfully landed – opening a critical second front against the Nazi regime in Europe and marking the beginning of the end of Hitler’s Third Reich.

“I have had the honor to meet brave veterans, including constituents, who fought valiantly that fateful day.

I want to gratefully recognize the sacrifices made by those who fought on June 6, 1944, and the millions of others who assisted the war effort worldwide. We owe our freedom and the reach of democracy in our world to them.”
