Prairie State College Student Review Staffers Receive Awards for Excellence in Journalism

CHICAGO HEIGHTS—(ENEWSPF)—May 22, 2014. The Student Review at Prairie State College (PSC) recently was recognized with a number of awards in the annual state competition sponsored by the Illinois Community College Journalism Association.

Several students received awards for excellence in journalism, including James McCoyne, first place in staff editorials; Latia Alexander, first place in arts feature; Essence Walker, second place in photo spread and third place in news photo; Charles Beard, second place and honorable mention in sports photo; Olivia Willoughby, second place in cartoons and second place in graphics; and Daniel Watson, third place in column. The entire Student Review staff was recognized with second place in front page design and an honorable mention in overall excellence.

The students worked under the direction of Helen Manley, coordinator, student and campus life, and faculty advisor William Sluis, a retired Chicago Tribune editor and reporter, who also teaches Journalism 101 at PSC.

“This is a spectacular showing, especially for a relatively small college like Prairie State,” said Dr. Marie Hansel, vice president of academic affairs and dean of faculty. “Congratulations are due to both our students and to their mentors, Mr. William Sluis and Ms. Helen Manley,” she added.
