Tokyo—(ENEWSPF)—April 11, 2011. Another earthquake rattled eastern Honshu today, exactly one month after the 9.0 earthquake hit on March 11. Japanese officials said the quake was a 7.0 magnitude, but the U.S. Geological Survey said it measured magnitude 6.6. The epicenter was about 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of Tokyo.
The earthquake hit just hours after people bowed their heads during ceremonies to mark a month since a massive earthquake and tsunami killed up to 25,000 people and set off a crisis situation of radiation leaks at the nuclear plant.
Japanese officials said today’s quake did not endanger operations at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex, where power was cut by today’s quake but quickly restored.
Shortly before today’s earthquake struck, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano called for evacuations of several towns beyond the danger zone declared around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, warning that residents could receive high doses of radiation over the coming months.
