Author Scott Turow and Musician Orbert Davis to Receive Honorary Degrees at Governors State University Commencement


University Park, Ill.—(ENEWSPF)–May 13, 2014 – Attorney and award-winning author Scott Turow and jazz musician and composer Orbert Davis will be guest speakers and honorary degree recipients at Governors State University’s commencement ceremonies May 17.

Turow is the author of nine best-selling works of fiction, including “Presumed Innocent” and, most recently, “Identical.” He is the recipient of numerous literary awards for his work including the Heartland Prize, Time Magazine’s Best Work of Fiction and the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award. He is a practicing attorney, having been a federal prosecutor, and now works as a criminal defense attorney at the Chicago office of Dentons.

Turow will also deliver a special guest lecture May 16 at 3 p.m. in Sherman Music Hall at Governors State.

Davis is an award winning trumpeter, composer and educator. He has won numerous awards for his compositions, including an Emmy Award for the PBS documentary “DuSable to Obama: Chicago’s Black Metropolis,” for which he wrote the score. He also was a music consultant for the film “Road to Perdition,” starring Tom Hanks.

“We are honored to have Mr. Turow and Mr. Davis as our honorary degree recipients,” said Governors State president Elaine P. Maimon. “Both enthrall their audiences with their unique talents and gifts. But they also reflect GSU’s commitment to scholarship, the arts, and public service.”

Commencement ceremonies will also feature two student speakers: Santila L. Terry, who receives her doctorate in occupational therapy and Kayla Randolph-Clark, a bachelor’s degree recipient in business administration.

Governors State University will have two commencement ceremonies: one at 10 a.m. for the colleges of Arts and Science and Business and Public Administration. The second ceremony will be at 5 p.m. for the colleges of Education and Health and Human Services. Both ceremonies will be at the Tinley Park Convention Center, 18451 Convention Center Drive, Tinley Park.
