Pittsburgh–(ENEWSPF)–May 8, 2012. The United Steelworkers (USW) said today that Congress needs to follow President Obama’s lead in creating jobs by acting on a “To Do List” that would help restore middle-class security. In a speech today in Upstate New York, the President emphasized that Congress now has the opportunity to create secure American jobs by manufacturing goods for the international economy.
“Manufacturing is the key to rebuilding our economy and creating family-sustaining jobs,” said USW International President Leo W. Gerard. “Middle America wants an economy that makes things and works for them, not one based on outsourcing, tax loopholes and shady financial deals.
“Rewarding the creation and retention of good-paying American jobs and eliminating the tax incentives to ship them overseas should be a top priority of Congress.”
The President also wants Congress to act to help attract and keep good jobs in the United States by passing legislation that gives companies moving operations back to the U.S. a new tax credit for moving expenses.
Other initiatives on the “To Do List” include cutting red tape to help responsible homeowners to refinance; creating jobs by investing in affordable clean energy; and, putting returning veterans to work using skills developed during their military service.
President Obama also wants Congress to invest in small businesses and jump-start new hiring by passing legislation that provides income tax credits for firms creating new jobs or increasing wages and extending 100 percent expensing in 2012 for all businesses.
The USW represents about 850,000 working men and women in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean in a wide variety of industries, ranging from glass making to mining, paper, steel, tire and rubber and other manufacturing environments to the public sector, service and health care industries.
