Statement by Representative Jan Schakowsky on the Passage of Republican-Led Farm Bill

Washington, DC—(ENEWSPF)–July 11, 2013. Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the passage of the Republican-led Farm Bill:

“Today the House passed the Republican-led Farm Bill, over my strong objection. The bill completely eliminates Title IV, which covers nutrition programs, most notably the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly called Food Stamps. SNAP provides temporary assistance to prevent hunger.

“Hunger exists in every district in America. One in eight households in my district is food insecure – meaning those families sometimes go hungry. Nationwide, food insecurity is even higher.

“In the wealthiest nation on earth, no one should go hungry. The bill that passed today is an injustice to the millions of Americans who benefit from SNAP – working families, seniors and one in four American children. It betrays who we are as a people.

“A conference committee made up of representatives from the House and Senate will now decide the fate of the SNAP program. I will continue to advocate for adequate funding for SNAP throughout that process so that American families are able to get the temporary assistance they need.”
