Senator Kirk, National Super Computer Center Officials Meet to Discuss Blue Waters Projects and Growing Competition from China

National Super Computer Application Center is Located in Urbana

CHICAGO –(ENEWSPF)–April 7, 2015.  U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill) yesterday met with National Center for Supercomputer Applications Director Ed Seidel and industry officials to discuss the strength of the Illinois-based Blue Waters Supercomputing machine and the competition from China’s increased computing power.

“I will be working with the Blue Waters team to make sure the nation’s fastest open science computer remains in Champaign, Illinois,” Senator Kirk said.

Additional participants also presented computer-generated modeling of their current projects, which included cracking HIV capsid, modeling super storms, and early cancer detection. Each presenter is currently a user of Blue Waters, the nation’s fastest open science computer.

China has increased its percentage of the worlds high performance computing from 3% to 14% in the past decade because of their country’s ability to create the #1 Supercomputer, the Tianhe-2. A decade ago, USA had 8 of the top 10 supercomputers and China had none, now China has #1 and we have 6 out of the top 10.

More must be done for American to retain its ability to create and innovate in the high performance supercomputing industry. Senator Kirk was an original cosponsor of Senator Lamar Alexander’s (R-Tenn.) ExaSCALE Computing Leadership Act of 2013, which sought to establish national laboratory-industry partnerships for the research and development of exascale computing machines.
