Preckwinkle Statement on Signing of Protect Illinois Communities Act

Cook County, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Illinois lawmakers took an important step toward protecting our residents by banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. These weapons were designed for the military and have no place in our communities.

Assault weapons have resulted in devastating, unnecessary loss of life in Cook County, Illinois and across the country. These weapons make us less safe, damage our communities and have fueled our nation’s gun violence epidemic.

Assault weapons bans can prevent mass shootings and loss of life. But we know that gun violence, and the manufacturing and sale of weapons, is not contained by borders. We must do all that we can to ban these weapons at every level of government, including advocating for reform at a federal level.

I am proud that Illinois is emerging as a leader in gun safety policy. As we build on this work, we must continue to rely on the evidence and center the needs of our communities that have been most impacted by gun violence. I applaud Governor Pritzker and stand with our lawmakers who are taking action to keep dangerous weapons out of Illinois.

The above is a statement from Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle.
