The Park Forest Environment Commission will host an Informational Meeting about the Village’s 2013 Community Garden Project on Saturday, February 16 at 10:30 a.m. at Park Forest Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive. Even if you have never gardened before, you can meet people with similar interests who can help you find your ‘inner green thumb.’ Learn more about this event in the ‘Green Events’ section.

Early Voting for February 26th Special Primary for 2nd Congressional District

For the February 26, 2013 Special Primary Election, Cook County voters may cast an early ballot at one of the County’s 11 sites. The closest locations for Park Forest residents are:

• Matteson Village Hall, 4900 Village Commons (Route 50, turn west by the Matteson Police Department).
• Chicago Heights City Hall, 1601 Chicago Road, Chicago Heights

Both locations will be open Monday-Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. NOTE: There will be no early voting for the Special Primary Election at Park Forest Village Hall.
Will County Early Voting for the Special Primary Election (2nd Congressional District) to be held on February 26, 2013 will be conducted in two locations.  If you reside within Crete Township, you may cast an early ballot on the Crete Township Office, 1367 Wood Street, Crete between February 11 and February 22, (closed February 12 and 18).  Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday 8:30 a.m. until Noon.

The Village of Park Forest’s Commission on Human Relations will present its 2013 Black History Month program ‘Church to the Club’ on Saturday, February 23 at 1 p.m. The event will take place at Freedom Hall’s Nathan Manilow Theatre, 410 Lakewood Boulevard, Park Forest. History and our present, include musical artists who mentor our future generations through music. Potpourri of Lectures to Feature Bonnie Blue – Thursday, February 28

The Potpourri of Lectures on Thursday, February 28 at 10:30 a.m. in the Park Forest Public Library’s Ringering Room, will feature Bonnie Blue, author of ‘Emmet Till’s Secret Witness: FBI Confidential Source Speaks.’ After a 35-year journey, finally the true story behind the lynching of Emmett Till has been told. This lynching caught the attention of the world in 1955. At a time when the United States was advocating democracy and being held as the pillar for freedom and justice for all, our country suffered a self-inflicted black eye. The world watched as international media reported that justice for an innocent Black boy, so heinously lynched, went unpunished. The author will also show that the Wolf Whistle was not the reason that the boy was lunched. The surprising truth from the mouth of the leader of the lynch mob, on his death bed, was finally told. This ‘truth’ is relevant and active even today; from the everyday people on the street to the White House. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

‘Crossroads of Freedom’

The theme of GSU’s Black History Month 2013 is ‘Crossroads of Freedom’ marking two important anniversaries in the history of African Americans and the United States – the sesquicentennial of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. Black History Month events at GSU the week of February 11 include:

• Wednesday, February 13 from noon to 4 p.m. in the Hall of Governors – GSU Black History Jeopardy. This event is sponsored by Student Life.
• Wednesday, February 13 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Engbretson Hall – African American Military Contribution to American Freedom Film Series: “The Miracle of Santa Ana.” This event is sponsored by the Office of Veteran’s Affairs.
• Wednesday, February 13 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. – ‘An Evening Honoring GSU African-American Researchers.’ This open class explores the history of the American social welfare system from its antecedents in Europe to the present day. Crosstown Classic – Cubs versus White Sox Trip – Limited Tickets on Sale Monday, February 18

On Monday, May 27, 2013, the Village of Park Forest for the first time ever presents a group outing to the Crosstown Classic! Don’t miss your opportunity to see the North-Siders invade the South Side, as the Cubs face off against the White Sox. This Memorial Day is the opening game of the 4 game series.  There are only 30 tickets available to this premium game, so take advantage and register today!  Tickets are $45 each (all ages). Children under 13 must be accompanied by a ticketed adult. Fee includes ticket to the game and round-trip school bus transportation. Due to the limited number of tickets available, a MAXIMUM of 3 tickets can be sold per household. The bus will depart from Park Forest Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive, at 4:30 p.m. and head to U.S. Cellular Field for the game. Step Back into the 1950s Valentine’s Day Exhibit at the Park Forest House Museum

Throughout February , the 1950s Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard, will be decorated with vintage valentines and decorations. The on-room classroom featured in the Museum will be decorated for a 1950s Valentine’s Day party with crepe paper candy baskets, and construction paper heart-shaped valentine ’mailboxes’ on each desk. Red honeycomb, puffy hearts and vintage valentines are on display throughout the house. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of 21st century and revisit your past in this gem of a museum, just down the street. The museum is open Wednesdays and Saturdays in December from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., or by appointment. The admission is $5 for adults; 12 and under are free. Park Forest Plaza Print for Sale

Annabelle Gould’s print of the Park Forest Plaza is available for sale at the Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard. The vibrant print is from an original watercolor, showing kids and their moms in the Park Forest Plaza, in front of the old Holiday Theatre and Golden Hanger Shop. The print can be purchased at the House Museum during normal hours of operation on Wednesdays and Saturdays or through the Society’s online store on their website at www.parkforesthistory.org. Tall Grass Arts Association, 367 Artists Walk, Park Forest

‘Luise Renner Retrospective’ – Through March 31

The exhibit, ‘Luise Renner Retrospective,’ will run at Tall Grass Arts Association through March 31.    The exhibit was curated by Richard Schmidt with assistance from Richard Renner.  It will feature the two and three-dimensional works of artist/illustrator Luise Renner who frequently exhibited in galleries in the Chicago area and southern suburbs.  Luise died in December of 2009 at the young age of 63. She left behind a large body of work.   This is the first time some of her works have been exhibited.  The exhibit is dedicated to her memory and presented in homage to her.   The exhibit features original paintings and custom tablecloths created by Luise. Unmounted high-quality prints (giclees) will be available for purchase. The collection displays approximately 60 works. PSC Presents 25th Annual Jazz Fest – Tickets Now on Sale

Some of the nation’s top jazz artists will perform at PSC’s 25th Annual Jazz Fest to be held on Friday, February 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the college. Featured musicians include Chicago trumpeter Orbert Davis, drummer Ernie Adams, and bassist Larry Gray, as well as New Orleans saxophonist Ed Petersen and PSC’s professor of music, Valerie Nicholson, on piano. The concert also will include a performance by the Southland Jazz Ensemble, a big band comprised of some of the finest professional musicians in Chicago and the south suburbs. Ticket prices are $15 for general admission. Students and senior citizens tickets are $10 each. IN WAR Series – Through Memorial Day 2013

In light of the ongoing war in Afghanistan and the rising need for mental health care for returning veterans, the National Veterans Art Museum (NVAM) is proud to hold its third annual IN WAR series in its new location at 4041 N. Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago. The third annual INWAR series examines intergenerational trauma: the passing of mass traumas from one generation to the next. ‘Reflections on Fatherhood,’ a Production of Governors State University Faculty, Students – Debuts Monday, February 11

Compelling stories about fathers and families are at the heart of a televised conversation between two award winning journalists, created by faculty and students at Governors State University and making its broadcast debut on WTTW Channel 11 on Monday, February 11 at 3:30 p.m. ‘Reflections on Fatherhood’ was inspired by “Dear Dad: Reflections on Fatherhood,” by John W. Fountain, a nationally renowned journalist, professor, and author. Veteran television journalist Robert Jordan, of WGN-TV, hosts the program. A special screening and discussion of the program is planned at Governors State on Father’s Day, June 15.

Job Search Assistance Every Tuesday at GSU

The Mobile Workforce Center’s mobile unit will be at GSU every Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., parked near the university’s front entrance. Center services include resume development, access to online job boards and websites, instruction in how to conduct an online job search and improve keyboarding skills, and assistance of staff. The center is equipped with 11 computer stations with Internet access, printer, and copy machines, and is wheelchair accessible. Services are free and available to residents in all counties. You can bridge the gap between technology and a new you at PSC’s new Opt In program that consists of two computer training centers and free classes to teach basic technological skills. Great Backyard Bird Count – Saturday, February 16

On Saturday, February 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., those of all ages can be part of the nationwide Great Backyard Bird Count. It’s easy. Just watch and count birds in your backyard or on a trail, then report what you saw. Come to the Nature Center throughout the day for help with basic bird identifications and tricky ones, too, choosing binoculars, bird feeding tips, local bird checklists and more. Join us for a Birding Hike at noon. This program will be held indoors. Hiking is on natural surface trails across uneven terrain. The event is free and open to the public. Experience the Thorn Creek Nature Center

Thorn Creek Nature Center is housed in a historic building, originally Immanuel Lutheran Church of Matteson, Illinois built in 1862, and later Village Bible Church of Park Forest. A gothic frame country church, its notable architectural features include curved ceiling, tongue-and-groove paneling and a raised pulpit. Its current attractions are displays of the preserve’s flora and fauna, a bird feeder viewing area, Eugene E. Schwartz reference library and an expanded children’s section. ‘Everglades of the North: The Story of the Grand Kankakee Marsh’ – Screening February 26

The documentary film ‘Everglades of the North’ will be screening on Tuesday, February 25 at 6 p.m. at the Field Museum of Natural History. The Grand Kankakee Marsh or ‘everglades of the North’ was one of the largest wetlands in North America. With interlocking wetlands, prairies, savannas and woodlands it was home to some of the highest concentrations of wildlife on the planet. Following the screening, Doug Stotz of the Field Museum will moderate a discussion by a panel of experts on the Kankakee Region, including:

SCOPE’s Chris Slowik to Discuss School Funding Issues – Wednesday, February 13

Chris Slowik, organizational director for SCOPE, will discuss school funding issues on Wednesday, February 13 at 7 p.m. at the Park Forest Public Library, 400 Lakewood Boulevard. This is part of a series of meetings that the League of Women Voters of the Park Forest Area will hold to meet with experts in order to study the issues impacting state and federal policy. SCOPE is a coalition of 60 public school districts in South Suburban and Will Counties. The mission of SCOPE is to provide leadership and organization to coordinate support from the legislature so that children in the south suburban region will be educated to meet the challenges of the future.  The meeting is free and open to the public. Candidate Forum – Sunday, February 17

The League of Women Voters of the Park Forest Area and the Park Forest Committee for Non-Partisan Government will co-sponsor a candidate forum on Sunday, February 17 at 1 p.m. in the Board Room of Park Forest Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive. Candidates running for Village Trustee positions and Library Board Trustee positions will be invited to speak to the public. The Forum will begin at 1 p.m. with the Village Trustee candidates speaking first for about 90 minutes. There are ten candidates for Village Trustee. Following that session, Library Board Trustee candidates will speak for about 1 hour. There are seven candidates for Library Board Trustee. Community members are encouraged to attend.

Get Your Taxes Done for Free at PSC

PSC in conjunction with the Center for Economic Progress (CEP) is offering opportunities for individuals and families meeting certain criteria to get their taxes done for free. The tax assistance will be available beginning January 26 through April 13. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free assistance is available to individuals with incomes less than $25,000; for families with income level less than $50,000. The service is offered on a first come, first serve basis.  To ensure the process goes smoothly, bring the following information: all W-2s and 1099s (if any), social security cards of Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN) for all family members; valid photo ID; copy of last year’s tax return (if available); bank account number and routing number for direct deposit of your refund; property tax bill; and the amount spent on college expenses. Other options offered during the tax preparation session include free help filing an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) claim, open a bank or savings account to deposit your refund, or obtain a prepaid debit card for your refund.
