Washington, D.C.-(ENEWSPF)- Congresswoman Robin Kelly released this statement following passage of the bipartisan Equality Act by the U.S. House of Representatives:
“With today’s vote, we sent a strong message that love is love. No matter who you are or who you love, you are a person worthy of dignity, respect and equal protection under the law.
This bipartisan measure is long overdue. In 2019, it’s a shame and national embarrassment that you can get married on Saturday and fired on Monday because of who you married. Who you love has NO impact of your ability to do a job and its past time for our laws to reflect that.
While I’m glad that we could come together today and pass this important bipartisan bill, it’s a shame that it took this long. Sadly, the Republican leadership who controlled Congress for the last eight years completely ignored this bipartisan bill, allowing it to anguish in committee-referral purgatory.
I encourage Senate Majority Leader McConnell to not repeat this mistake. He should immediately call a vote on this bipartisan measure that’s broadly supported by the American people.”
