Congresswoman Kelly Urges President Obama to Use Executive Authority to Designate Pullman National Park

CHICAGO –(ENEWSPF)—September 18, 2014. Congresswoman Robin Kelly recently sent a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to use his executive authority to designate the Pullman community in Chicago as a U.S. National Historic Park.

The letter, led by Rep. Kelly and signed by Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Marcia Fudge, Congressman Danny Davis and 19 other CBC members, outlines for the President how Pullman’s role in African-American history and in the history of America’s labor movement makes the 140-year-old landmark community worthy of national park designation.

“Pullman’s place in Americana is undeniably unique – as impressive as its clock tower, as colorful as its Greenstone Church and as diverse as its row houses,” the letter reads. “Preserving this history would honor the contributions past, present and future of America’s exceptional labor force and citizens.”

Rep. Kelly’s letter is part of her continuing push to preserve Pullman’s legacy, which has included introducing legislation to create the Pullman National Historical Park. The National Park Service has deemed Pullman worthy of national park status. Within his executive authority, President Obama has the power to grant that status.
