In the week ending July 6, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 360,000, an increase of 16,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 344,000. The 4-week moving average was 351,750, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week’s revised average of 345,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending June 29, unchanged from the prior week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 29 was 2,977,000, an increase of 24,000 from the preceding week’s revised level of 2,953,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,970,750, a decrease of 3,500 from the preceding week’s revised average of 2,974,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 384,829 in the week ending July 6, an increase of 49,778 from the previous week. There were 442,192 initial claims in the comparable week in 2012.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending June 29, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week’s revised rate. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,768,879, a decrease of 16,079 from the preceding week’s revised level of 2,784,958. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 3,112,199.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending June 22 was 4,505,508, a decrease of 52,257 from the previous week. There were 5,874,101 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2012.
Extended Benefits were not available in any state during the week ending June 22.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,345 in the week ending June 29, an increase of 1,050 from the prior week. There were 2,317 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 66 from the preceding week.
There were 16,883 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 22, a decrease of 370 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 33,726, a decrease of 503 from the prior week.
States reported 1,644,987 persons claiming Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) benefits for the week ending June 22, a decrease of 22,877 from the prior week. There were 2,606,287 persons claiming EUC in the comparable week in 2012. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 29 were in Puerto Rico (4.9), Alaska (3.8), New Mexico (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.2), Connecticut (3.1), New Jersey (3.1), California (3.0), Nevada (2.8), Oregon (2.7), Illinois (2.6), and the Virgin Islands (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 29 were in New Jersey (+6,068), New York (+2,824), Connecticut (+2,802), Michigan (+1,814), and Washington (+1,573), while the largest decreases were in California (-9,323), Florida (-3,245), Pennsylvania (-2,628), Massachusetts (-1,973), and Maryland (-1,715).
