Baugher Enterprise, Inc. Recalls Baugher’s Apple Cider Because of Possible Health Risk

Silver Spring, Maryland–(ENEWSPF)–November 6, 2010.  Baugher Enterprise, Inc, of Westminster, Maryland, is recalling all production of Baugher’s Apple Cider because it may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria (E. Coli O157:H7). E. coli O157:H7 causes a diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.

Baugher’s Apple Cider is sold in gallon and one-half gallon plastic jugs and is sold in Maryland and the Gettysburg area of Pennsylvania through retail stores.

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) and local health departments are conducting an investigation of a cluster of seven E. coli O157 infections. There have been no deaths, although three of the seven cases have been hospitalized. A potential association exists with the consumption of unpasteurized Baugher’s Apple Cider. However, no contamination has been confirmed.

In response to this ongoing investigation, Baugher’s Orchard & Farm of Westminster, MD today issued a voluntary recall of all apple cider because of its potential to contain the E. coli bacteria. At this time, no other Baugher’s products are affected by this recall.
