The Damage is Done: Romney Nose-Dives with Latino Voters

WASHINGTON, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)–March 8, 2012.  SEIU Secretary-Treasurer Eliseo Medina yesterday issued the following statement regarding the Univision News/ABC/Latino Decisions and Fox News Latino polls:

“If Mitt Romney is reveling in Super Tuesday results, he should stop. A new Fox News Latino poll found only 14 percent of Latino voters would vote for Romney in the general election. The poll results may be buried by Super Tuesday coverage but the truth behind the numbers is hidden in plain sight.

“Just a few months ago, 23 percent of Latino voters expressed support for Romney. Curiously, instead of putting forth policies that would help boost the economy – the issue voters care about most – Romney has chosen to wave the anti-immigrant flag and pander to the most radical and extreme elements of his party.

“From his enthusiastic support of Arizona’s “model immigration law,” to his decision to seek counsel from anti-immigrant officials Kris Kobach and Pete Wilson, to his unwarranted and unjustified attack on Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor – one of the nation’s most respected Latino leaders, Mitt Romney is courting disaster. He is also confirming the accuracy of the new Univision News/ABC/Latino Decisions poll which found that more than 70 percent of Latinos believe the GOP doesn’t care about or is downright hostile to Latinos. The polls come as experts predict that Republicans need about 40 percent of Latino voters to win the White House in 2012.

“It’s clear that Romney’s disingenuous, two-faced outreach comes with a hefty price tag as he nose-dives with Latino voters and the GOP brand suffers a major backlash. Romney appears to be holding a nonrefundable, one-way ticket to a big, painful loss with Latino voters in November.”
