Center for Constitutional Rights Applauds City Council for Overriding Mayor Bloomberg’s Community Safety Act Veto

NEW YORK–(ENEWSPF)–August 22, 2013.  Today, in response to the New York City Council’s override vote on the Community Safety Act, the Center for Constitutional Rights released the following statement:

We applaud the New York City Council for overriding Mayor Bloomberg’s ill-advised veto of the Community Safety Act. The people have spoken, a federal court has spoken, and now New York City’s legislative body has spoken.

The CSA, will create an inspector general and an enforceable and expanded prohibition on discrimination by the NYPD. These common-sense and urgently needed measures will complement the reforms ordered in Floyd v. City of New York last week, including the appointment of an independent monitor and a community-based joint remedial process.

It is time for the mayor and the police commissioner to join with the rest of the city in building a better, more effective NYPD, one that respects the rights of all New Yorkers and is accountable to them.

The Center for Constitutional Rights is dedicated to advancing and protecting the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Founded in 1966 by attorneys who represented civil rights movements in the South, CCR is a non-profit legal and educational organization committed to the creative use of law as a positive force for social change.
