Moms United to End the War on Drugs Announces Resolutions for the New Year

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–December 29, 2016.  In light of the November election and a new administration that threatens to decimate gains made over the past decades in drug policy, a woman’s right to choose, immigrant rights, LGBT rights, and the fight against racial injustice, Moms United to End the War on Drugs is launching a new #momsresolutions campaign for the New Year, showcasing what we are prepared to resist and defend in the name of human rights, dignity and equality.

“Silence creates a form of acceptance, so as individuals and family members we must speak out for tolerance and equality,” said Gretchen Burns Bergman, Co-Founder and Executive Director of A New PATH and Lead Organizer of Moms United to End the War on Drugs. “If we hesitate and fail to protect the rights of our neighbors, who may be easier targets, and look away in a self-protective stance, we will have lost our humanity, and in the process evil will have won over good. I believe it is my job as a parent advocate to constantly and consistently promote peace and tolerance, particularly when times are tough and we fear that we no longer have a voice. Now more than ever, we need to work in coalition and with respect for one another, and we must make our voices heard.”

With the new administration, all previous rules of integrity, honesty and diplomacy don’t appear to apply. A dictatorship is looming that will swallow up our liberties. The Moms United campaign will be organized and vigilant in protecting humane and life-affirming policies, and in resisting all forms of hatred and bigotry.

From January 1-7, 2017 Moms United will use social media to announce #momsresolutions:

  1. Moms will increase efforts to DISMANTLE the War on Drugs
  2. Moms must RESIST all forms of prejudice and bigotry
  3. Moms will PROTECT the rights and dignity of all people
  4. Moms will peacefully PROTEST racism, sexism, misogyny, homophobia and xenophobia
  5. Moms will steadfastly PROMOTE peace and tolerance in the face of hatred
  6. Moms will continue to FIGHT against mass incarceration
  7. Moms will be vigilant in DEFENDING our values and principles

Moms United to End the War on Drugs is an international campaign that works to end the violence, mass incarceration and accidental overdose deaths that are a result of current punitive and discriminatory drug policies. They are building a movement to stop the stigmatization and criminalization of people who use drugs or who are addicted to drugs. Moms United is a project of A New PATH (Parents for Addiction Treatment and Healing), a 17-year old nonprofit organization that works to reduce the stigma associated with addictive illness through education and compassionate support, and to advocate for therapeutic rather than punitive drug policies.
