Rep. Jan Schakowsky Announces Heather Sawyer as Democratic Staff Director of the Select Panel to Attack Women’s Health

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–December 18, 2015.  Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement announcing that Heather Sawyer will be the Democratic Staff Director of the Select Panel to Attack Women’s Health:

“Today, I have the pleasure of announcing that Heather Sawyer will serve as the Democratic Staff Director of the Select Panel to Attack Women’s Health. House Republicans created this Select Panel after three House Committees had already investigated – and found no evidence to support – allegations against Planned Parenthood sparked by highly-edited videos manufactured by an anti-abortion organization. Democrats opposed the Panel from the outset as an unnecessary, unwarranted attack on women’s health. And, in the aftermath of the murders on a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs by an anti-abortion extremist, we called upon Speaker Ryan to immediately disband the select panel, without success.

“We are therefore gearing up to do whatever it takes to protect American women, to ensure their access to the health care, and their right to birth control, sex education, family planning, preventive testing and screenings, and safe and legal abortion services. Heather will help lead our efforts. She is a top-notch lawyer and investigator with a deep background working on civil rights. She has done a fantastic job serving as the Chief Counsel to the Democratic Members of the Select Committee on Benghazi and is well equipped to direct our staff on this Select Panel.”

The Chief Counsel to the Democratic Members of the Select Committee on Benghazi, Heather was Chief Counsel of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet. Prior to that, Heather Sawyer served as Minority Counsel for the House Judiciary Committee, Subcommittee on the Constitution. Before joining the House Judiciary Committee in 2007, Heather taught at Georgetown University Law Center from 2005-2007 and worked as Senior Counsel in Lambda Legal’s Midwest Regional Office from 1996-2005.
