CHICAGO—(ENEWSPF)—March 2, 2017. Signs with the message “Hate Has No Home Here” have been posted in windows, yards and car bumpers throughout Rogers Park.
These popular signs serve as a counter to the divisive and harmful rhetoric and policies emanating from the current occupant of the White House and a declaration of our community’s solidarity with those have been the object of hateful speech and conduct.
In short, by displaying these signs, we are declaring Rogers Park a “Welcoming Community.”
Please be a part of this noble effort. Alderman Joe Moore’s 49th Ward Service Office is giving away FREE Hate Has No Home Here yard signs, window posters and bumper stickers. Stop by Moore’s office during regular office hours and pick up a sign and/or bumper sticker. The office is open Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; Wednesdays 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.; and Fridays 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
The Hate Has No Home Here movement began in Chicago’s North Park neighborhood, sparked by a phrase suggested by a third grader Signs can now be found in all parts of the city, across the country, and on six continents. The message is especially apt in Rogers Park, which has served as a port of entry for generations of new Americans since its incorporation as a village in the 1870s.
The organizers of Hate Has No Home Here (HHNHH) are committed to providing the signs to all, regardless of their ability to pay. If you wish, a small contribution may be made to help offset the cost of printing via the HHNHH Go Fund Me site.
Along these same lines, everyone is encouraged to attend the “Rally and Day of Action,” Saturday, March 4th, 10:00 a.m., at the United Church of Rogers Park, 1545 W. Morse (at Ashland) (Please note: the original rally location has been changed to accommodate a larger-than-expected crowd).
We’ll hear from leaders in the immigrants’ rights movement and your neighbors who are directly affected by the Trump’s new deportation rules. We’ll then fan out across the neighborhood, knocking on doors and working L stations and grocery stores, giving our immigrant neighbors information about their rights if they are confronted by a law enforcement officer.
Over the last several weeks, Alderman Moore has also joined other local elected officials to sponsor several immigration “Know Your Rights” workshops to provide resources for immigrants, refugees, their friends and supporters, and concerned neighborhood residents. The next workshop will take place Sunday, March 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Gale School, 1631 W. Jonquil. This event is open to all, and simultaneous interpretation will be provided in Spanish, English, and Arabic.
