Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky Statement on 4th Anniversary of Implementation of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

CHICAGO – (ENEWSPF)–August 15, 2016.  Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the fourth anniversary of the implementation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) immigration program:

“Four years ago President Obama acted to prevent the deportation of young children, students and members of our United States Armed Forces who were brought to this country as children and grew up knowing only the United States as home.  The President used his legal authority – as many of his predecessors did before him – to act when the Republican-led Congress would not.  But doing so, he has empowered  young “DREAMers” to reach for their full potential.  DACA represents the true values of our country – a nation that embraces our diversity and serves as a welcoming place to those who seek to be a part of this country. We are a nation that builds bridges, not walls.

“DACA has been critical to keeping families together, but we know that further action must be taken to fix our broken immigration system. I was deeply disappointed by the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision which will delay implementation of expanded DACA and DAPA for the parents of U.S. citizens.  It is long past time that we pass comprehensive immigration reform, and I will continue to keep up the fight in Congress to give a path to citizenship to those who have come to the United States seeking to participate in the American dream.”
