NARAL Pro-Choice America on D.C. City Council Introduction of Landmark Paid Family Leave Bill

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–October 6, 2015. Today, members of the D.C. City Council introduced a bill to provide all district residents with access to family and medical leave insurance.

Said Sasha Bruce, senior vice president for campaigns and strategy at NARAL Pro-Choice America:

“This bill before the D.C. Council will grant what every parent deserves: the dignity and financial stability of paid time to care for new babies. Voters across the country know that it is a crucial part of the reproductive freedom they overwhelmingly support, along with birth control, abortion access and protection from pregnancy discrimination in the workplace.

“Parental leave is not a social issue—it’s an economic one that cannot be ignored. By putting this bill forward, the D.C. Council is showing what it means to truly support families when they choose to have children. We need to work together to establish fair and equitable policies that ensure the long-term health of our families without jeopardizing the wages employees depend on to pay the bills each month.”

Over 2,500 NARAL Pro-Choice America members signed a petition in support of the D.C. Council bill to stop employers from denying new parents the time they need to bond with their child.

The U.S. is still the only developed country that offers zero weeks of guaranteed parental leave to workers.
