Senator Kirk Statement on Department of Energy’s Approval of FutureGen Clean Coal Project

WASHINGTON–(ENEWSPF)–January 17, 2014.  U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) issued the following statement today following the Department of Energy’s final stamp of approval on FutureGen, the state-of-the-art, clean coal project in Meredosia, Illinois.

“I am pleased with the Department of Energy’s decision to approve this clean coal, state-of-the-art-project in Meredosia,” Sen. Kirk said. “More than 1,000 new jobs will be created during the peak of FutureGen’s construction, with a nearly $12 billion boost to Illinois once construction is complete. I look forward to working with local officials and the Illinois delegation to ensure the construction and development of this project is swiftly competed.”

The Department of Energy released a report detailing the approval of the project this week, which allows for the start of construction as early as this year.

Senator Kirk has a long history of supporting FutureGen to make Illinois the leader in clean coal technology. Meredosia was chosen as the project’s construction site and has received funding and support from the Administration and local officials. Clean coal emissions and new state-of-the-art technology will be the focus of the FutureGen plant.
