100,000 Sierra Club Members Call for Enforcement to Prevent Import of Illegally Sourced Wood

WASHINGTON, DC–(ENEWSPF)–October 3, 2014.  One year ago federal agencies launched an investigation into Lumber Liquidators, the top-selling flooring retailer in America, for allegedly importing illegally sourced wood products from the Russian Far East. Now, more than 100,000 Sierra Club supporters are calling on the Obama administration to fully enforce the Lacey Act. The Lacey Act is a landmark conservation law, amended in 2008, that bans the import of illegally sourced wood products.

In response, Jesse Prentice-Dunn, Campaign Representative for the Sierra Club’s Responsible Trade Program, release the following statement:

“The public understands that illegal logging threatens communities and our climate. That’s why more than 100,000 Sierra Club supporters have asked the Obama administration to enforce the Lacey Act and hold greedy corporations accountable. The Obama administration must fully investigate charges that Lumber Liquidators imported illegally sourced wood products from the Russian Far East. Not only is Lumber Liquidators allegedly destroying the habitat of the last 450 Siberian tigers in the wild, it is threatening American jobs and weakening our economy by undercutting companies that play by the rules.”
