Alpine Slicing and Cheese Conversion Company Issues Voluntary Recall of Additional Cheeses Because of Possible Health Risk


Silver Spring, Maryland–(ENEWSPF)–January 5, 2012.  Alpine Slicing and Cheese Conversion Company of Monroe, WI is voluntarily recalling “Brennan’s Cellars Shredded Premium Fondue Blend — Emmentaler Swiss & Gruyere Cheese”, “Brennan’s Cellars Shredded Mild Colored Cheddar Cheese”, “Brennan’s Cellars Shredded Part Skim Mozzarella Cheese” because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

No illnesses have been reported.

  • Approximately 372 lbs of the recalled “Brennan’s Cellars Shredded Premium Fondue Blend — Emmentaler Swiss & Gruyere Cheese” was distributed between November 23, 2011and December 6. The Fondue Blend packages were packed in 16oz packages with the light brown label “Brennan’s Cellars Shredded Premium Fondue Blend”. The packaging lists the identifier code 290A11 located on the back of the package.
     
  • Approximately 168 lbs of the recalled “Brennan’s Cellars Shredded Mild Colored Cheddar Cheese” was distributed on October 8, 2011. The Shredded Mild Colored Cheddar Cheese was packed in 16oz packages with the light brown label “Brennan’s Cellars Shredded Mild Colored Cheddar Cheese”. The packaging lists the Sell By date 18FEB12 located on the back of the package. The word “Shred” appears to the immediate left of UPC code on the front of the package.
     
  • Approximately 137 lbs of the recalled “Brennan’s Cellars Shredded Part Skim Mozzarella Cheese” was distributed on October 8, 2011. The Shredded Part Skim Mozzarella Cheese was packed in 16oz packages with the light brown label “Brennan’s Cellars Shredded Part Skim Mozzarella Cheese”. The packaging lists the Sell By date 18FEB12 located on the back of the package. The word “Shred” appears to the immediate left of the UPC code on the front of the package.

The recalled products were distributed to Brennan’s Stores located in Milwaukee, Dane and Green Counties in the state of Wisconsin, which is where consumers may have purchased such products.

Alpine Slicing & Cheese Conversion discovered the issue during testing of its products by an independent laboratory. Laboratory testing has confirmed that certain products processed on the shared line contained Listeria monocytogenes. Therefore, other products produced on the same line, even if they have been tested and found to be negative, have the potential to be contaminated.

Alpine Slicing and Cheese Conversion Company has contacted the FDA and issued the recall to retail grocery stores and distributors in Wisconsin. The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as FDA and the company continue their investigation into matter. All remaining inventory has been quarantined.
