Last Wednesday, November 16, the Executive Committee of the Democratic Party of DuPage  overwhelmingly passed a resolution in support of the Standing Rock Sioux and their brave and principled stance against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), in an effort to protect natural resources and the global climate from the harmful effects of fossil fuel extraction, transport and use.

About the Standing Rock Sioux’s stand

On Thanksgiving, we remember the assistance early American settlers received from their Native American neighbors in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Without their help, the colony would have been unlikely to survive its first winter.

Let us remember that spirit of mutual respect and cooperation while considering how we treat the Standing Rock Sioux. The lands that they are fighting to protect have been guaranteed to them by treaty with the US government. While defending their lands, the Standing Rock Sioux have been attacked with water cannons and mace, and have been subject to violence and unwarranted surveillance at the hands of militarized police and private security firms. And yet, the efforts of the Standing Rock Sioux benefit all Americans.  Their fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline contributes to the struggle against global climate change, an issue that affects us all.

The Standing Rock Sioux are working to protect a world we all share, and as we reflect upon our blessings this Thanksgiving we should not forget their sacrifice.  Please go to www.sacredstonecamp.org/faq to learn how you could help.

Resolution to Oppose the Dakota Access Pipeline

Since the Standing Rock Sioux are defending the ancestral lands that have been allocated to them by treaty with our federal government, and since the preservation of their land rights is in alignment with our broader goal of curtailing further investment into fossil fuels so as to avert global climate disaster, we believe that the Standing Rock Sioux deserve our support and admiration.

Therefore, be it resolved by the Democratic Party of DuPage County that we endorse their efforts, and demand that our Representatives in the Illinois and United States Governments act immediately to restore the rights of the Standing Rock Sioux, protect the natural resources in and around the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, and halt further public investment into fossil fuels, the use of which is the primary driver of global climate change.

Specifically, we demand the following:

  1. We call on President Obama to instruct the Army Corps of Engineers to discontinue this project and rescind its permitting.
  2. We ask that President Obama issue an executive order to halt all new oil pipeline construction, as all pipelines have the potential to leak and incidences of major pipeline bursts in the US have increased by 60% since 2009.
  3. We call upon the State of Illinois and all Representatives therein to pledge to exhaust all available options to stop the construction of this pipeline.
  4. Furthermore, we call upon governments at State, Federal, and local levels to prioritize and expedite the transition to sustainable sources of energy, investing in the well-being of future generations and safeguarding the balance between humankind and the natural environment.

The Democratic Party of DuPage County seeks to inform voters of issues and act upon civic and other matters of common interest to all residents of DuPage County.
