Ad, titled “Michelle,” features Michelle DeFord, who lost her son in Iraq. On Trump’s treatment of the Khan family: “I would like to tell Donald Trump what it feels like; the sense of emptiness that only losing a child can bring. Those people should be honored and treated with kindness for the rest of their life. And I don’t think Donald Trump will ever understand that.”
WASHINGTON, DC –(ENEWSPF)–August 8, 2016. VoteVets PAC and Priorities USA are releasing a new television ad today titled “Michelle,” featuring Michelle DeFord, who lost her son, SGT. David Johnson, to a roadside bomb, in Iraq. SGT. Johnson joined the National Guard after 9/11.
In the ad, DeFord painfully describes the “sound of the boots” walking up the stairs, when she received a next-of-kin notification of her son’s death. She says when she watched Donald Trump’s interview, in which he questioned Ghazala Khan not speaking at the Democratic National Convention, she felt “such a sense of outrage.”
She goes on to say, “I would like to tell Donald Trump what it feels like; the sense of emptiness, that only losing a child can bring. Those people should be honored and treated with kindness for the rest of their life. And I don’t think Donald Trump will ever understand that.”
“Donald Trump has still not apologized to the Khans, and still hasn’t shown any remorse for his hurtful comments,” said Jon Soltz, Iraq War Veteran, and Chairman of VoteVets PAC. “That is not acceptable. Trump, and others, may just want to let this issue go and move on, but we will not. On behalf of Gold Star mothers like Michelle, we cannot.”
“Gold Star families like Michelle’s make an incredible sacrifice for our country and they deserve nothing less than our utmost respect and kindness. As Michelle says, it’s clear from Donald Trump’s outrageous attack on Gold Star families last week that he will never understand that,” said Guy Cecil, Chief Strategist at Priorities USA. “Donald Trump’s total lack of respect for the Khan family represents a new low in his already dangerous and divisive campaign and proves once more just how unfit he is to be President of the United States.”
Last week, VoteVets helped dozens of Gold Star families organize an open letter to Donald Trump, demanding he apologize to the Khans for his comments. That letter can be read here: http://www.votevets.org/press/gold-star-letter
“Understand That” will be backed by a $5.4 million ad buy, running statewide in FL, NC, OH, IA, NV, PA, NH, CO and nationally on MSNBC, CNN, FOX & The Today Show.
