VoteVets Calls for Hearings on Yemen Raid

WASHINGTON, DC–(ENEWSPF)–February 27, 2017. On behalf of its 500,000 supporters, including veterans and military families, and Gold Star families, VoteVets.org is supporting the call of Bill Owens, father of fallen SEAL Ryan Owens, to investigate the raid in Yemen, ordered by Donald Trump.

In a statement, Jon Soltz, Iraq War Veteran and Chairman of VoteVets.org said:

“If the Congress can find time to hold multiple and repetitive hearings into Benghazi, it can certainly find the time to hold a single hearing into the botched Yemen raid, ordered by Donald Trump.

Unlike the internal review done by the military, which cannot examine the decision-making process at the top, Congress must look into the process used by Donald Trump to approve this raid — the very raid that President Obama chose not to green-light.

Specifically, we need to know how much of a role Steve Bannon played in giving the go-ahead. We know Bannon was at the dinner where Trump gave the order. We know that Bannon, subsequently, was named to the National Security Council. If an unqualified political operative has outsized influence in approving military operations, like the Yemen raid, we need to know that right now. We also need to know how much of a role Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, played in making the decision to launch the raid, as Kushner was also at the dinner.

The military will always do everything it can to prepare for operations, as much as possible. And the military will take every precaution to prevent the loss of life. Despite all of that, losing lives is often unavoidable. Those of us who served understand that when we enlist. However, we also realize that sometimes operations should not be approved in the first place.

Did the Commander in Chief ultimately make the wrong call, based on bad reasoning, given to him by unqualified people? We need to know if that’s what happened in this situation. Bill Owens, the father of our fallen hero, Chief Petty Officer Ryan Owens, deserves to know. America deserves to know.

Founded in 2006, and backed by over 500,000 supporters, the mission of VoteVets.org is to use public issue campaigns and direct outreach to lawmakers to ensure that troops abroad have what they need to complete their missions, and receive the care they deserve when they get home. VoteVets.org also recognizes veterans as a vital part of the fabric of our country and will work to protect veterans’ interests in their day-to-day lives. VoteVets.org is committed to the destruction of terror networks around the world – with force when necessary – to protect America. While non-partisan, the group is the largest progressive organization of veterans in America.
