Statement by AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka on Indiana’s Discriminatory ‘Religious Freedom’ Law

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–March 31, 2015

Indiana’s passage of the so-called “Religious Freedom” law is deeply disappointing and troubling. No one should have a government-backed right to deny services to any targeted group, especially under the guise of religion.  And in another sign that Governor Pence’s priorities are sadly out of touch, he is spending his own campaign cash to push legislation to lower the wages of workers on public projects.

The labor movement is dedicated to ensuring environments that are inclusive and supportive of all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity. And we believe that Hoosiers — along with all Americans — deserve higher wages, not less pay for more work. Working people call on Governor Pence to repeal the Religious Freedom law, and other governors should veto any similar legislation that may arise.  We also call on the governor to focus on helping working families rather than taking money out of their pockets.
