Statement by AFL-CIO President Richard L. Trumka on October 2011 Jobs Report

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–November 4, 2011.

Our nation’s economy continues to let down the 99 percent of Americans who are struggling to make ends meet.  October’s jobs numbers showed lackluster job growth of 80,000 jobs over all, including the loss of 24,000 public sector jobs.  We need immediate action to jumpstart our economy and provide help to those experiencing tough times. Yet the exact opposite is happening, thanks to Republicans in Congress, who are voting week after week against creating jobs – against jobs for teachers, for firefighters, or for crucial infrastructure projects.  They have said themselves that they are more interested in defeating President Obama than putting millions of people back to work.

Investing in our future and creating good jobs should be a bipartisan goal. Yet right wing partisan ideology is blocking common-sense solutions like rebuilding our roads, bridges, schools and transit and keeping teachers and first responders on the job.  The Republicans in Congress are focused on protecting millionaires at the expense of creating good jobs.  And working Americans simply aren’t buying it anymore.

In the next few days Democrats in Congress and President Obama will continue to push for job creation through investment in infrastructure, jobs for veterans and unemployment benefits for the jobless.  The test will be whether Republicans continue to toe the party line or if they will finally stand up for their constituents.  One thing is clear: Working families who are struggling to get by will remember who fought for the 99 percent and who stood with those at the very top.  And they will hold those politicians accountable.
