Representative Jan Schakowsky Statement in Response to the Department of Justice Ending Contracts With Private Prisons

CHICAGO –(ENEWPF)–August 18, 2016.   Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement in response to the Department of Justice’s decision to end contracts with private prisons:

“I applaud the Department of Justice’s decision to end contracts with private prisons.  I am a strong supporter of criminal justice reform, including the need to end the use of for-profit prison corporationsthat do not provide accountability, transparency or quality services.  As the Department of Justice has concluded, private contracts have been a bad bargain for American taxpayers and a detriment to the American justice system.

“As a cosponsor of H.R. 3543, the Justice is Not for Sale Act which calls for the end of contracts with private prisons, I am heartened by this decision.  Today’s action is an important step, but more is left to be done.  Our legislation, sponsored by my friend and colleague Rep. Grijalva in the House, also calls for reform of ICE detention centers  and humane treatment for the children and adults who are detained in them.  I will continue to do what I can to achieve change in those facilities as well.”
