People’s Action: Defeat of Obamacare Repeal is a Testament to the Persistence of Hundreds of Thousands of People Who Stood Up for Health Care for All

WASHINGTON –(ENEWSPF)—March 24, 2017.  The House of Representatives has decided to pull from consideration House Speaker Paul Ryan and President Trump’s health care plan, which would have forced people to pay more for less health coverage and throw 24 million people off their health insurance.

This disastrous and deeply unpopular plan would have devastated families across the country, hitting hardest those people and communities most in need of more support for their clinics, hospitals, and health care, not less.

LeeAnn Hall, co-director of People’s Action and member of the executive committee of Health Care for America Now, issued the following statement:

“The fact that this disastrous bill could not muster the votes needed for passage even among Republicans is a testament to the persistence of hundreds of thousands of people nationwide who stood up for health care for all. They called their representatives, sent letters, filled town halls, protested. They did not give up.

“The firestorm that swept this country will continue to burn, and not just in the expected places. People in home towns and small communities are seeing that they can flex their power and fight for democracy and health care for everyone.

“Now we turn to the task of improving our health care. We must protect Medicare from privatization and open it to everyone. We must expand Medicaid in all 50 states. We must eliminate deductibles and negotiate lower prices from drug corporations.

“Having health care makes us free in our personal lives and as a country. And we will keep on fighting for it.”
