Today, Hillary Clinton gave a speech condemning the “alt-right,” a divisive ideology supported by Donald Trump and white nationalists that embraces an extreme and dystopian view of America. Trump recently hired one of the most prominent apologists for the alt-right worldview, Steve Bannon, as his campaign CEO. NARAL President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement in support of Secretary Clinton’s remarks:
“Hillary’s speech today once again proved why she is such a champion for women and all Americans. Rather than shy away from the hateful and divisive strategies employed by Donald Trump and his supporters in the ‘alt-right’ movement, she took them head on. Bullies depend on silence to rule, and Hillary called their bluff and exposed their bigoted agenda for what it is.
This movement that has thrown its support behind Trump is driven by hate. It seeks to disempower women and divide Americans based on race, religion, and class. It’s a backward worldview with a mission not only to make misogyny great again, but also to imbue our civic discourse with racism, anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia. For quite some time, Trump has embraced the alt-right, which shares with the anti-choice movement the belief that women are less than equal. He embraced it when he said there should be ‘some form of punishment’ for women who choose abortion. He embraced it when he called women ‘fat pigs’ and ‘disgusting.’ And he went above and beyond for the alt-right movement when he hired its ringleader, Steve Bannon, as his new campaign CEO.
“At a time when this country needs to come together and offer everyone regardless of race, religion or gender opportunities to get ahead, Donald Trump and the anti-choice alt-right movement focus on dividing us. America is better than this. Hillary Clinton’s leadership on empowering women through policies that expand access to birth control, abortion, and paid family leave is key to being all we can be.”
