Congresswoman Robin Kelly Calls DOJ Report on Chicago Police Department ‘Deeply Concerning’

Washington, DC –(ENEWPF)–January 13, 2017. Congresswoman Robin Kelly today released this statement concerning the Department of Justice’s report on the Chicago Police Department:

“Today’s report is deeply concerning. It is clear that more reforms are needed and needed immediately.

We all agree that law enforcement has a difficult job. The vast majority of officers are drawn to law enforcement because they care deeply about their community and want to serve and protect it.

However, we cannot ignore the small, but real minority who actively use their position of authority to violate the rights and safety of others.

While the city has already taken steps to address these issues, many more reforms are needed. We simply cannot allow this level of disregard for citizens and their Constitutional rights to continue.

In Congress, I’ve worked to promote officer accountability and training.  I’ve supported federal resources that make direct investments in community safety.  We need more direct investments – like those afforded by community-orientated policing (COPS) grants –  that strengthen trust between law enforcement and the community.  We can no longer afford to have an environment where police departments and the community fail to work hand-in-hand.

As this consent decree is formulated and implemented, I will be watching the situation very closely to ensure strict compliance and forward progress.”
