This Week: Fried Pork, Butter Cows, and Abortion

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–August 20, 2015.  With nearly every presidential candidate trooping through Iowa in the past week for their obligatory pilgrimage to the Iowa State Fair, the coverage has mainly focused on helicopter rides, fried food, and who can out-do each other with extreme immigration policies. But one issue has flown under the radar – abortion.

This week, many of the Republican candidates continued to tell us about how they’d deny abortion access—a bad move for anyone who wants to win the general election given that 7 in 10 voters trust women to make their own medical decisions.

Kasich:

Ohio Governor John Kasich proves he’s no moderate on abortion. Kasich stated, “We’ll do our best” when asked if he would close all abortion clinics as president. Unfortunately for women, Kasich has a track record of shutting things down, including nearly half the abortion clinics in Ohio and twice voting for a government shutdown.

Fiorina:

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina wants to deny almost every woman her legal right to an abortion.

This graph illustrates the number of women she’d allow to make that decision with their doctor:

Actually that is HP stock plummeting during her leadership. But you get the idea.

Walker:

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker refused to answer if, as president, he would make abortion illegal in America. Based on his record in Wisconsin, the answer is pretty clear.

Rubio:

Joining many others in the field in flip-flopping around on this issue, this week Sen. Rubio reinvented his policy on abortion. For the last two weeks, Sen. Rubio has repeated that he will support anti-abortion legislation without exceptions for the life of the woman. Now he’s changing his tune: he told an activist that he believes there should be exceptions for the life of the woman.

Bush:

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush tried to convince a pro-choice Iowan that he’s moderate for supporting rape and incest exceptions in abortion bans, but really he was just telling women under what circumstances they’re allowed to consider abortion.

Carson:

It was tough competition, but the winner for the most hypocritical position this week goes to Dr. Ben Carson. Ben Carson signed an Iowa Right to Life petition to defund Planned Parenthood.  Carson has criticized Planned Parenthood for donating fetal tissue for research, despite performing research with fetal tissue during his medical career.
