UN and Partners Congratulate Haiti’s President-Elect

NEW YORK–(ENEWSPF)–22 April 2011 – The United Nations and its partners today congratulated Haiti’s President-elect Michel Martelly on his poll victory, saying the world body looked forward to working closely with his administration once it is inaugurated on 14 May.

“We wish Mr. Martelly great success in the accomplishment of his mandate, which is crucial for the future of Haiti,” said a statement issued by the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) on behalf of the UN and the major donors to the electoral process, including Brazil, Canada, the European Union, France, Spain and the United States.

“We also take note that the results of the legislative elections overturn the results of 17 races in the Chamber of Deputies and 1 result in the Senate, all with the exception of two in favor of the incumbent party. The preliminary results published on 4 April appeared to reflect election-day accounts by Haitian and international observers that cases of irregularities and fraud on 20 March were isolated and reduced.

“Observers also confirmed that meticulous work was carried out by the Vote Tabulation Centre in addressing fraud and irregularities identified in the tally sheets. The final results have therefore raised serious concern about the transparency and legitimacy of the process leading to their publication,” according to the statement.

The statement expressed UN’s commitment to supporting the right of the people of Haiti to choose their political leaders through free and fair elections.

“We urge all political actors and their supporters to remain calm and to work through peaceful means to address this issue,” it added.
