Trump Can’t Stop Kicking the Khan Family in the Heart

Donald Trump spent weeks fighting with the Gold Star family of Captain Humayun Khan, a Muslim soldier who was killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq in 2004. While campaign manager Kellyanne Conway may have slapped Trump’s twitter fingers long enough to make him stop saying that Khan’s mother was kept from speaking (because she is a Muslim), or that Khan’s father is related to terrorist groups (because he is a Muslim), that doesn’t mean that Trump can’t rub a little salt in the wound through sheer lack of human decency.

Trump declined to apologize to the family for his earlier remarks. And instead repeated his claim that …

“If I were president at that time, he would be alive today, because unlike her, who voted for the war without knowing what she was doing, I would not have had our people in Iraq.”

Despite all evidence that Trump was for the Iraq War before he was against it (and for pulling out immediately before he was for never leaving), he’s still making this claim. And making it in a way that any reasonable person would know is bound to cause pain.

“This is the most cruel thing you can say to grieving parents, that if I was there this would not have happened,” Khan told ABC News today in response to Trump’s comments. “There’s no sincerity in those remarks…This is one character that a leader must have to be the leader of a great country, to be the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of the United States: empathy. And this person totally lacks that.”
