Democrats Take the Fight Over Trump’s Muslim Ban to the Supreme Court, House and Senate floors

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–January 30, 2017

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi has organized a rally at the Supreme Court for Monday evening to protest the Trump regime’s Muslim ban.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer will be joined by their colleagues and immigrants and refugees to reverse what they called a “hateful, anti-refugee and anti-immigrant” order. Several Democrats joined protesters at airports and other venues to decry the treatment of those detained.“President Trump’s unconstitutional executive order banning refugees and the citizens of Muslim nations betrays everything the Statue of Liberty and our nation stand for.  The President’s action is not only unconstitutional but immoral,” Pelosi wrote in a “Dear Colleague” letter on Sunday. “We are witnessing an historic injustice unfold, and we must keep the pressure on,” she wrote.

Democrats in both chambers will also push legislation to reverse the ban. In the House, it’s called the “Statue of Liberty Values Act of 2017,” written by Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) who serves as the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee’s immigration panel. It would defund Trump’s order, barring any agency from using any federal funds to enforce it, and would declare the order “null and void.” It would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to include a prohibition on banning immigrants based on religion or nationality. Which should be necessary, because there is still a constitution, but with these Republicans and this “president,” it is.

In the Senate, Schumer will call for immediate consideration of legislation from Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) to rescind the order. Expect Majority Leader Mitch McConnell or his second John Cornyn—or any other Republican enabler of Trump—to be on hand to object. Schumer is also going to try to delay the procedural vote on the nomination of Rex Tillerson to be secretary of state slated for this afternoon.
