Montgomery, AL-(ENEWSPF)- Governor Robert Bentley signed legislation into law last week expanding legal protections for qualified patients who use cannabidiol-dominant extracts for therapeutic purposes.
Under the legislation, House Bill 61 aka Leni’s Law, patients may possess extract preparations of CBD that also contain up to three percent THC for the treatment of a seizure-related debilitating condition. The law further states that no state agency may initiate proceedings to remove a child from a home if that child and/or his/her guardians are using CBD in compliance with the statute. It does not provide for a legal, in state source for CBD-specific products.
The new law takes effect on June 1, 2016.
Separate legislation signed into law in 2014 only permits the use of CBD by patients participating in a state-sponsored clinical trial. Trial data provided by the University of Birmingham earlier this year reported that an estimated 90 percent of subjects with pediatric epilepsy showed “some improvement” following treatment with CBD extracts.
