Washington, DC—(ENEWSPF)—May 22, 2014. Yesterday Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) helped introduce an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) with Congressman Jeff Denham (R-CA). The amendment is based on the ENLIST Act, which Denham introduced last June. It would provide a way for undocumented immigrants to become Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs) to the U.S. by serving in the U.S. military. She also spoke before the House Rules Committee in favor of the amendment.
“Young people who were brought to America as children and for whom America is their only home deserve the opportunity to pursue citizenship,” said Duckworth. “This is especially true for those who serve in our military. Those who are willing to defend and die for our nation deserve the opportunity to legally live in the country they are defending.”
Duckworth is also a cosponsor of H.R. 15, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. This bill contains many of the same provisions included in the bipartisan immigration reform bill that passed the Senate last July. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, enactment of the bipartisan Senate-passed comprehensive immigration bill would reduce the deficit by $850 billion. The CBO also estimates that the Senate-passed bill would increase economic growth by 3.3% in 2023 and 5.4% in 2033.
