Chicago Heights police fatally shot a man who brandished a rifle at police Sunday afternoon.
Erik Page, 28, of 3638 Western Ave., Park Forest, was shot by police at West 23rd Street and Euclid Avenue in Chicago Heights, officials said.
Page was pronounced dead at 8:13 p.m. Sunday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
At 1:54 p.m., Chicago Heights police received a call for help from a woman who said her mentally ill son was walking down the middle of the street and would not listen to her, according to a police statement.
According to police, officers located Page walking west in the middle of West 21st Street, approaching Euclid Avenue, carrying a rifle, police said. According to police, the man was ignoring the commands of his mother to get into the car.
According to the report in the Southtown Star, when an officer arrived, Page brandished the rifle and started shooting at the officer, the statement said. The officer returned fire, striking Page, according to the statement.
