What to do with Old Medications?

I’m writing this as a blog entry because I don’t know the answer.

I have some prescriptions that have expired, and some I could not take because of side effects. These are just sitting around in my medicine cabinet because I recall hearing that old meds. should not be put down the drain.

I called CVS in Park Forest yesterday and was advised that I should not put them down the drain.  Rather, I should fill the pill bottles with water, let the medications dissolve, and then throw them in the garbage.

Does that sound right?  Don’t they still have a negative impact on the environment?  Or am I missing something here?

Does anyone have a source online I can point to that gives proper advice on disposal of unused medications?
