Portland, Oregon—(ENEWSPF)–October 28, 2016.  The largest group of progressive veterans in America, VoteVets PAC, has released the following statement, in response to Mark Kirk’s smear of Tammy Duckworth in last night’s Illinois Senate debate.

Jon Soltz, Iraq War Veteran and Chair of VoteVets said in a statement:

“There is no room for racism in the military, and no room for racism in America. Mark Kirk can say whatever he wants, but last night he made clear that he will run his campaign, and the office of Senator, the same way Donald Trump has run his campaign — based on racial and ethnic slurs, insults, and tarring non-whites as not sufficiently American.

Tammy Duckworth is an American hero, and she comes from a long, long lineage of those who served. And despite Mark Kirk and Donald Trump, she will be the next Senator from Illinois.

We would call on Mark Kirk to drop out, but we would rather see him get beaten handily at the polls.”

In the debate, when Duckworth raised her connection to the American Revolution, Kirk responded by saying, “I had forgotten that your parents came all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington.”  Duckworth’s mother’s family is from Thailand.  Her father’s family, meanwhile, was traced back to serving in the Revolutionary War.

VoteVets has endorsed Duckworth.
