Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)— The Village of Park Forest is currently seeking a Sustainability Corps Volunteer for 10-12 months beginning in October. This opportunity is an AmeriCorps funded position, and is part of the Greenest Region Corps, a project of the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and Serve Illinois Commission.

Position Overview:

The Park Forest Sustainability Corps Volunteer will be assigned to the Economic Development and Planning Department, which is responsible for coordinating the Village’s sustainability actions. The Village Board has adopted the Growing Green: Park Forest Sustainability Plan (2012) and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan (2014). Currently, Village Staff is working with a resident committee to draft a Climate Action/Resilience Plan, which is expected to be adopted before the end of 2018. In 2015, the Village received a Three Star designation by STAR Communities, and Village Staff are currently engaged in the process of recertification of the STAR designation. In 2018, the Village was named a Gold SolSmart Community. These accomplishments, and more, require a great deal of effort, focus, and coordination by Village Staff, Elected Officials, and the community.

The Sustainability Corps Volunteer will play a key role in the Village’s efforts to expand implementation of the Village’s sustainability goals to more residents, and to the local schools and places of worship. To do this, the Volunteer will create a more robust sustainability website for the Village, promote the Village’s community gardening program to increase the number of gardens in the Village, and work with schools and places of worship to encourage implementation of climate action goals. The Volunteer will also be responsible for managing the metrics that document the Village’s sustainability progress in the areas of water conservation and energy efficiency (at a minimum). The Volunteer will also assist with the documentation needed to finalize the recertification process for STAR Communities designation.
